We welcome our next baby boy in a few short weeks! I’ve learned over the last several months that things have changed since I had my last baby five years ago. Maybe it’s mostly me that has changed in my ways of thinking?! There were so many things that I just didn’t even give much thought 10 years ago with my first pregnancy. For one, the amount of information regarding the chemicals we find in foods and personal care products wasn’t as prevalent then. It was only after my fourth baby was born that I really started to learn about this topic in more detail. I never thought about what was in the baby wipes I was using…I just knew sometimes they burned a bit on raw bottoms. I also didn’t think anything of the typical Johnson & Johnson baby products, lotions, bath gels, etc. Vaseline in tender places, “OK”, that’s what the doctor told me to do. I know some of you are cringing at those brand names and some may not be aware of the chemicals in them at all! Well, I’ve wised up a bit since then and I’ve learned there are better ways and I’ve learned most of the time, the typical western medical world won’t be much help when it comes to cutting out the things that are so easily absorbed through delicate skin. The accumulation of chemicals contributing to each person’s toxic load starts in infancy. This is where our own research is needed and we need to empower others to understand that they have choices too.
This graphic below will show you just how “dirty” many of these products are however, don’t fret, we have several choices with many DIY recipes as well as a great place in Young Living to purchase many great products for our babes! (venture over to the these sites for more info on the toxicity of various products http://www.thinkdirtyapp.com/ and http://www.ewg.org/ )
My youngest was about 6 months old when I was introduced to Young Living. I began using the oils and that was the start of a journey down a different path with our health. As I prepare now for our fifth baby, five years after my last, there were a few things I wanted to do differently. Now I am not opposed to using store bought items on the go but when at home, I’d like to make an effort to reduce the chemicals. The main areas I have chosen to focus on doing things differently than in the past are baby wipes, baby wash and baby lotions. Several months ago I purchased the essential oil blend, Gentle Baby. It was fun to open and use it in my recipes. It smells so good!!
My mom is wonderful at sewing and making useful things for the all of her grandchildren so naturally I asked if she could make some washable baby wipes! They turned out so cute and comfy looking.
I mixed the solution up in the recipe below and made double to go in a mason jar to save for refills. SUPER EASY!
2 cups warm water
2 Tablespoons Castile Soap-Baby Mild
2 Tablespoons Vitamin E oil
3 drops Lavender Essential Oil
2 drops Gentle Baby Essential Oil
Add the Castile Soap to warm water in a mason jar. Then add the Vitamin E oil and your essential oils. Pour into a spray bottle and store the rest in the refrigerator for refills.
Making our own baby wash should be much less expensive than buying pre-made and certainly much less toxic. I used the recipe below with a foam pump, saved another batch in a mason jar and will keep it with our little guy’s mesh tub insert.
¼ cup Castile Soap-Baby Mild
¾ cup filtered water
2 teaspoons Vitamin E Oil
8 drops Gentle Baby Essential Oil
Pour water in foaming soap dispenser and then add Castile soap. Add Vitamin E oil and essential oils. Gently shake to stir. Double or triple the recipe to store for refills in a mason jar.
I just purchased the Kidscents Lotion from Young Living after I smelled it for the first time at a class last week. It will be perfect! I’ll also take a small container and pour some in it for my diaper bag. Check it out in the link!
A few other essentials (see picture above) that I will carry in my diaper bag that I didn’t have a clue about 5 years ago, are the YL Rose Ointment to use as a salve on tender places, a dropper bottle with coconut carrier oil and 2 drops of Lavender EO for dry skin areas, a homemade lip chap because we can use it not only on chapped lips but other chapped areas of the body and of course the Tender Tush diaper cream from Young Living. I was actually cleaning out my old diaper bag last week and I had so many old diaper creams…mostly chemical laden. Saying good-bye to those!
I hope you enjoy and most importantly, I hope this helps you to continue to research the things you may be using that might could use a change!
Each year Young Living hosts THE most amazing gathering of oily friends from all around the world! This past August, 20,000+ of us gathered in Grapevine, Texas to learn more about essential oils, to invest in our businesses (100% optional – many only go for education on the products) and to be encouraged and inspired among friends and speakers. Ask any Essential Living community member if they a) enjoyed it and b) would go again, and I bet 100% of them would say YES…I’d even bet a bottle of Valor on it!
